Mike's Story

Hi, My name is Mike Hager. My Ocular Melanoma journey started June 2018. I noticed blurred vision in the right eye and decided that I needed to see the ophthalmologist and find out what was going on. I went to Charlotte Eye Center and had a dilated eye exam. The Dr. there was concerned by what he saw behind my eye. He suggested I travel to Duke Eye Center in Durham NC and have more extensive tests and a biopsy. I went there in early July. The biopsy came back as Ocular Melanoma. My family and I made the decision to travel to Wills Eye Hospital in Philadelphia PA to see Dr. Carol Shields for a second opinion. We went there in late July. The Dr’s there performed many tests and told me that my right eye needed to be removed. We agreed and I had the surgery August 2nd. I came home to recover for about 6 weeks and went to Baptist Cancer Center for 30 days of radiation. I now go every 6 months for scans and blood work at Baptist to make sure the cancer hasn’t spread to other vital organs. There have been many emotional times from the beginning of all this up to present day, however my family, my friends, and certainly God have helped me cope and adjust to the life I live now with one eye. It’s not always easy, but I am grateful for all the blessings I have each day. I hope to help raise awareness about Ocular Melanoma and help find the answers about what causes this cancer and help find a cure. Thanks to all for your generosity and support.

Net proceeds raised will be donated to OMF to support Ocular Melanoma #SeeACure.
